How did it get to be Friday again already? This week just whizzed by!

We had a great Independence Day: mid-day at the lake, home to watch – what else? – Independence Day – then fireworks when it got dark. Stayed up way too late.

Stayed up way too late Sunday night, too, since I took the kids to the drive-in to see Up and The Hannah Montana Movie. Loved Up (I don’t think there is a single Pixar movie I haven’t loved) and was surprised that the second feature was actually pretty good – and had some catchy music that I can’t get out of my head, because my daughter has been singing it ever since.

Went to the gym three times this week and walked on the treadmill. Increased my speed and duration each time. My butt and thighs hurt.

Got a haircut today for the first time in ages – my hair had grown out fairly long, now it’s a little longer than chin-length and layered again. Much cooler for summer.

Tonight, Natalie and I are going to a mother-daughter campout. I will stay for hot dogs and campfire songs and the scavenger hunt, but come home to sleep in my bed so a dozen tween-aged girls don’t keep me awake until o-dark-thirty.

Five days until my sister Debra gets here for a quick two-day visit. Haven’t been able to hug her in real life since her divorce. Can’t wait to get all caught up.

We have two members of our extended family undergoing treatment for cancer. My aunt is having radiation treatments to follow up on a lumpectomy for breast cancer. Kevin’s sister will undergo surgery and then chemotherapy for liver cancer. Prayers would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I’m off to run errands in 20 minutes, so I better get on with the links:

~ This comic is funny, and sadly, true. We love our public library!

~ The Best Books of the Year So Far.

~ ABC is holding a contest for budding song-writers: write a mock theme song for LOST.

~ This video is amazing: A choir uses their hands to simulate a rainstorm – and then they sing Africa.

At Books and Movies recently:

~ My favorite YA fiction, part one
~ Book review: Songs of the Humpback Whale by Jodi Picoult
~ Book review: The Book of Unholy Mischief by Elle Newmark

Have a great weekend!

Marriage Meme

kevin.jpg

I saw this at Hey, Lady! Whatcha Readin’? and thought it would be fun to do a meme that isn’t just about me. If you play along, answer the questions about you and your spouse. :)

What are your middle names?
Mine is Eileen; Kevin’s is Duane

How long have you been together?
Together since October 1994; married March 31, 1995 – so coming up on 14 years.

How long did you know each other before you started dating?
A few months – we met in the spring and had our first date on October 1st.

Who asked whom out?
I asked Kevin after being assured by our mutual friend Sue that he was interested. I didn’t want to wait for him to get up the nerve!

How old are each of you?
Kevin is 43; I’m 36.

Whose siblings do you see the most?
Until recently, I would have said mine, but my sister Marni moved out of the Pacific Northwest to St. Louis, and since we took two trips to Portland in 2008, we saw Kevin’s brother Bob and his wife Kathy twice in one year. Before that, we hadn’t seen them since before Jonathan was born.

Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple?
Definitely financial issues.

Did you go to the same school?
Nope – we didn’t even grow up in the same area. Even if we had, Kevin’s 7 years older.

Are you from the same home town?
Oops, already answered that. I grew up in Sedro Woolley, Washington; Kevin grew up in Milwaukie, Oregon.

Who is smarter?
Depends on the topic. If you’re talking about history or literature – academic stuff – then I am. If you’re talking about practical, real-life stuff – especially when discerning people’s motives and attitudes, then he is.

Who is the most sensitive?
I am.

Where do you eat out most as a couple?
Our little town has two fantastic restaurants that we love: Rancho Chico’s (Mexican) and Stefanie’s Oak Street Grill.

Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?
To Seely Lake, Montana to visit my parents the first Christmas we were together.

Who has the craziest exes?
I don’t know that either of us has exes that qualify as crazy.

Who has the worst temper?
We both have tempers, but deal with them differently.

Who does the cooking?
We both cook – I do most week-days, but Kevin often cooks breakfast and dinner on the weekends.

Who is the neat-freak?
Neither of us.

Who is more stubborn?
Kevin. Though he might disagree with that – but he’d be wrong.

Who hogs the bed?
We both do.

Who wakes up earlier?
Most days, I do – unless it’s a day when Kevin has to be at the office to do something with the computers before everyone else gets there.

Where was your first date?
At The Melting Pot in Portland, Oregon.

Who is more jealous?
Probably me, but jealousy isn’t really a big issue for either of us.

How long did it take to get serious?
One date – we were together from that point on.

Who eats more?
I do.

Who does the laundry?
Laundry is a family affair at our house – we all pitch in.

Who’s better with the computer?
He’s a techie. I’ve learned a lot from him, though.

Who drives when you are together?
Kevin – and we fight over the choice of CD. :)

If you play along, let me know!

My Life According to Google

February 17, 2009 Categories: Memes & Quizzes | 2 Comments

I did this meme awhile ago, right after Carrie Underwood won American Idol, and most of the results that came up were about her. I saw it this week on Back to Books, and thought I’d give it another try.

Type in the following into Google search and choose from the first description found…. Be honest, don’t just pick one out to be funny!

1: Type in “[your first name] needs”:
…(what) Carrie needs after a night like this is a nice, hot bath.

2: Type in “[your first name] looks like”:
(This is what) Carrie looks like when she’s scraping the snow off her car. (Done enough of that this winter!)

3: Type in “[your first name] hates”:
Carrie hates the Scene listeners on Last.fm. (Huh?)

4: Type in “[your first name] goes” OR “[your first name] has gone”:
Carrie has gone and spoiled me again!

5: Type in “[your first name] loves”:
Carrie loves finding the greatness in shopping.

6: Type in “[your first name] eats”:
Carrie eats cake.

7: Type in “[your first name] has”:
Carrie has to remarry for “Sex and the City.”

8: Type in “[your first name] works”:
Carrie works thirty-six hours a week…

9: Type in “[your first name] lives”:
Carrie Lives on Salvation Street by Will Wakefield

10: Type in “[your first name] died”:
Carrie died at the age of 75 from diabetes complications in South Dakota on June 2, 1946. (This is referring to Carrie Ingalls.)

11: Type in “[your first name] does”:
Carrie does non-fiction.

12: Type in “[your first name] will”:
Carrie Will is an artist and New York native working in fine art photography.

13: Type in “[your first name] can”:
(The Parents Guide for) Carrie can be found here. (This is referring to a parents’ guide for the film Carrie. My suggestion? Don’t let your kids watch it.)

14. Type in “[your first name] plays”:
Carrie plays ball.

15. Type in “[your first name] drives”:
Carrie drives Christine with Cujo riding in the back. (Another Stephen King reference!)

15. Type in “[your first name] feels”:
Carrie feels at home in theater and loves the entire affair. (Since I was a theater major in college, this is fitting!)

Let me know if you play along!

Mosaic Me

January 7, 2009 Categories: Memes & Quizzes | 3 Comments

I saw this at Eileen’s blog a long time ago, and saved it for a rainy day. And, after all the snow we’ve had (almost 5 feet!), we did have a rainy day today. We then had an avalanche come off the front of our roof – thankfully, no one was on the sidewalk at the time – and made huge berms almost armpit high. Kevin has a lot of shoveling to do in the next couple days – poor guy. Anyway, here’s how the meme works:

1. Type your answers to each of the questions below into the Flickr search engine (www.flickr.com)
2. Pick an image from the first page only.
3. Copy and Paste the URLs for each image into Mosaic Maker (http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/mosaic.php)
4. Save your mosaic to your computer and upload it into your own post.
5. Don’t forget to credit the photographers!

QUESTIONS:
1. What is your first name? (Carrie – photo by TRPhoto)
2. What is your favorite food? (pizza – photo by KitschCat)
3. What high school did you go to? (Sedro Woolley, WA – photo by Brettbigb)
4. What is your favorite color? (purple – photo by Davidgutierrez2007)
5. Who is your celebrity crush? (Gerard Butler – photo by monoshift2)
6. What is your favorite drink? (coffee – photo by *Narly)
7. What is your dream vacation? (Ireland – photo by Edward Dullard)
8. What is your favorite dessert? (Cheesecake – photo by Vita Arina)
9. What do you want to be when you grow up? (author – photo by Glimpse of Glory)
10. What do you love most in life? (Family – photo by Hard-Rain)
11. What is one word to describe you? (booklover – photo by aliraza)
12. What is your flickr name? (I don’t have one, so I used Carrie K. – photo by venus208)

Random meme

November 25, 2008 Categories: Memes & Quizzes | 1 Comment

I can’t seem to resist a meme, and I saw this one at Kev’s.

1) How do you like your grilled cheese?
On white bread, with Velveeta, light to medium brown with the cheese melted.

2) Where did you go on your last vacation?
Lincoln City, Oregon this summer.

3) Who are your godparents?
My paternal grandparents, but my Grandaddy isn’t with us anymore, so now it’s just Grandma.

4) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Still homeschooling – an 11th grader, a 9th grader, an 8th grader, and a 6th grader. Still in Colville, but hopefully in a bigger house.

5) Where are you at noon everyday?
Home fixing lunch for my family.

6) How many speeding tickets have you gotten?
One. This year. It was Michelle’s fault – we were visiting too much on the way home from Spokane, and I wasn’t paying attention. ;)

Two or three weeks ago, I think.

16) What do you order at Subway?
Roasted Chicken Bacon but instead of Ranch, I like the Chipotle Southwestern sauce.

Only enough so that nothing falls out when I open the door. Usually.

18) How do you make headaches go away?
Ibuprofen.

19) Have you owned a beta before?
The fish? Or the old video player? Neither.

20) If you moved out of state where would you go?
I wouldn’t. I love Washington State. Though if you asked me in three months and there is still snow on the ground, I might answer California or Hawaii.

White outer curtain with a clearish inner curtain, no decorations – same as Kev.

Scrambled or fried or hard-boiled.

26) Where do you wash your clothes?

Jim and Veronica. They used to head to Brazil every winter, where Veronica’s family is, and Jim would teach scuba diving, but now they stay put.

Fairly talented actor, but anyone who adheres to a religion created by a science fiction author is a couple bricks short.

Both.

32) What would be the best gift someone could get you right now?

Next week is one big stress-ball. Nan’s ortho appointment Wednesday, shop for Nan’s birthday plus a gift for her to bring to a friend’s birthday party which she will attend Thursday. Friday night will be Nan’s birthday/slumber party which involves many squealie girls. Possible Tae Kwon Do promotion on Saturday. 34) What is something in your home that you collect?
Come on, you can all guess that one, right?

Slept with a pulse oximeter on my finger. Not a real restful night.

36) Who did you last see?
Kevin is sitting in the same room with me.

My Taste in Art

October 21, 2008 Categories: Memes & Quizzes | 3 Comments

Your result for What Your Taste in Art Says About You Test…

Balanced, Secure, and Realistic.

27 Impressionist, 11 Islamic, -2 Ukiyo-e, -29 Cubist, -21 Abstract and 3 Renaissance!

Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects. Impressionist paintings are balanced, use colored shadows, use pure color, broken brushstrokes, thick paint, and scenes from everyday life or nature.

People that like Impressionist paintings may not alway be what is deemed socially acceptable. They tend to move on their own path without always worrying that it may be offensive to others. They value friendships but because they also value honesty tend to have a few really good friends. They do not, however, like people that are rude and do not appreciate the ideas of others. They are secure enough in themselves that they can listen to the ideas of other people without it affecting their own final decisions. The world for them is not black and white but more in shades of grey and muted colors. They like things to be aestically pleasing, not stark and sharp. There are many ways to view things, and the impresssionist personality views the world from many different aspects. They enjoy life and try to keep a realistic viewpoint of things, but are not very open to new experiences. If they are content in their live they will be more than likely pleased to keep things just the way they are.

Not a real post – a meme

October 20, 2008 Categories: Memes & Quizzes | 5 Comments

I’m exhausted from our trip to Portland. It all went well, and the kids did fantastic in the tournament. They placed well, were good sports, and enjoyed themselves.

I’m too tired for a real post, so I’m stealing a meme I saw at The Bayer Family Blog:

01. What’s the last TV show you saw?
Life. Friday nights on NBC – please, please watch this show. It’s excellent, but it’s not getting very good ratings, and I’m worried it will be cancelled.
