Broken for You
“Be happy,” Margaret says, taking her hands. “We’re worth more broken.”
Wanda answers, “I love you, too.”
I strayed from my Winter Reading Challenge list to read Broken for You by Stephanie Kallos, simply because Literary Feline said it was the best book she read last year. And of all the books she read, if this was the best, it had to be good. And it was. But good doesn’t even begin to describe this book.
Broken for You is the kind of book that breaks your heart when it ends, and yet you can’t read more slowly during the last few chapters, because you don’t want the words to stop coming. This kind of book is a treasure, and when I read in the author’s bio that it was Ms. Kallos’ first novel, I was awed. She is an author who can make you not only see the story, but smell, taste, and hear it, too. I especially enjoyed the fact that the story was set in Seattle, as I recognized her description of places around the Seattle Rep, where I attended performances as a child.
In Broken to You, Wanda Schultz moves to Seattle to search for a lost love. She is broken. Margaret Hughes lives in her mansion on a hill in Seattle, surrounded by beautiful, expensive things that bring her shame. She is broken. When these two women find each other, they learn the value of broken things.
This story is brilliant and moving and will break your heart.

Coincidentally, I have the same book and I’m partway through. It was one of the ones mom brought me from the boxfull she got at Sally Ann’s.
