When I first heard about The Dangerous Book for Boys, I thought “How cool does that sound? I need to get that for the boys!” And my second thought was, “Hey, what about girls?” Obviously, authors Andrea Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz had the same thought, and they put their thoughts to action. The Daring Book for Girls is the wonderful result of these two daring women putting their heads together.

Natalie and I have been browsing through this book for the past few days, stopping to read sections aloud to each other, and making plans for the projects we want to do together. The pages of this book are like a walk down memory lane. So many activities that I remember from my girlhood are nestled in these pages, as well as a lot of information I would have found fascinating when I was a girl. In fact, I still do!

Here are just a few examples of what can be found in The Daring Book for Girls

~ Rules of the Game sections on basketball, softball, tetherball, bowling, foursquare, netball, and darts.

~ Profiles on Queens of the Ancient World

~ Real-life princesses around the world

~ A Short History of Women Inventors and Scientists

~ How to make your own: scooter, lemon-powered clock, flower press, willow whistle, friendship bracelets, cloth-covered book, clubhouse, daisy chain, tree swing, peach pit ring, paper, and peg board game

~ Words to impress

~ Female pirates

~ Female Olympic firsts

~ How to change a tire

~ What tools your toolbox should hold

~ What do we do about boys?

I could go on and on and on. This book contains so many fabulous sections; I’m sure we will be referring to it for years to come.

Be sure and check out The Daring Book for Girls web site and this video of Andrea and Miriam on The Today Show. Then add this book to your Christmas list for all the daring girls in your life.

I thought it would be fun to end the review with a little quiz. Here are some of the tidbits in The Daring Book for Girls that rang the memory bell for me.

1. In, Out, Over, On - What game does this refer to?

2. What’s the next line? Say, say, oh, playmate, come out and play with me…

3. Onesies, twosies, threesies, leftovers - What game does this refer to?

4. What’s the next line? Not last night, but the night before…

What great memories!

I’m pretty sure #3 is referring to jacks. I had the same answer to #2 as Lisa, but also know another version to the song that is more PG-rated.

Is #1 Chinese jump-rope? (My, how UN-PC that would be now!)

Not sure about #4; probably a jumprope ditty, but not one I’ve ever heard.

    #2:

    My dolly’s got the flu,
    Boo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo.
    Play in my rain barrel,
    Slide down the cellar door,
    And we’ll be jolly friends,
    Forevermore!

The first one is what we called french skipping (with a big loop of elastic I think. Our rhyme went
    ‘England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales,
    Inside, outside, inside, on’

Not last night but the might before
10 fat ___ came knocking on my door.

Can’t remember who it was though? Pirates maybe?!
Ringing bells in my memory, but obviously not loudly enough :-)

This looks like an excellent Christmas present for my 12 yr old dd.

DebD - Yes, it would make a great Christmas gift for any girl!
