Transformers was our movie of choice for movie night last night, and let me say right off that the boys thought this was one really cool movie. I can’t remember the number of times I heard them cheer or say, “Whoa!” or laugh out loud. The special effects are pretty amazing, and since the good and bad guys are both robots, the violence is so unrealistic that it didn’t bother me to let them watch it. I enjoyed watching it with the boys, although it’s probably not something I would’ve sought out to watch on my own.

Shia LaBeouf plays a teenage boy who buys a car that turns out to be a transforming robot looking for some secret cube of power that was left in the Arctic Circle millions of years ago by robot aliens. Yes, I know it sounds cheesy – and, of course, with a movie about transforming robots, you kind of expect that. What I didn’t expect was to find it so completely entertaining. LaBeouf is a great actor – I especially enjoyed him in Holes – and I predict that he will have a brilliant career ahead of him.

I also predict that all of the guys in your life will love this movie. One word of caution: there is some double-entendre sexual humor, and one instance of dialogue that wasn’t even hidden in an entendre. Thank goodness, my boys are young enough that all of that went completely over their head. If I had known that, however, I probably would’ve waited a few years to let them watch it. My recommendation would be that this movie is for ages 12 and up, and maybe older if you’re very discriminating about what your kids watch.

When I was in the movie theater, that one single scene caused more parental embarrassment than I have ever seen at the theater before. I was totally annoyed that they threw in such an unnecessary scene. And I left the theater shaking my head and asking “Why?”
Other than that scene, we also loved the movie. BUT it will prevent me from buying it on DVD. I just know that with repeated watching, as my nine year old is want to do, I would be forced into explaining things we are not ready for.

Robin – “Why?” was my question, too. The producers had to know that a movie based on a toy line for boys would attract young boys to the theater. I just don’t get it. I will be loaning our review copy to my Dad and asking him to keep it for a few years. ;)

Yeah… that and the “lubricating” scene bothered me too. My 7 year old son really wants to see this movie – and I’m not prepared to let that happen for a few years – I’m still holding off on letting my kids watch Star Wars episode three, unless I’m there to cover their eyes or fast forward.

I’m a fan of the Transformers from all the way back in 1984. I really enjoyed this movie.

Kev – I wish I had known some of the content issues before I let my boys watch it. Luckily my almost-six year old fell asleep on the couch and missed most of it.
