I’ve mentioned before that Hannah Montana is a favorite show around our house, especially for the 10 1/2-year-old girl demographic. The first few times I watched it, the over-the-top acting drove me up the wall, but I have to admit that Hannah has grown on me. As has Billy Ray Cyrus - minus the mullet, of course.

Hannah Montana: Life’s What You Make It contains four episodes of the popular Disney Channel series: Achey Jakey Heart, part 1; Achey Jakey Heart, part 2; I am Hannah, Hear Me Croak; and I Want You to Want Me to Go to Florida.

I am Hannah, Hear Me Croak is especially notable for the guest-star appearance of Brooke Shields as Hannah’s mom, who was killed in a car accident prior to the time of the series. She appears in Hannah’s dreams, and Shields was a great choice for the role. I do have to say, though, that the actors who make me want to watch this show with Natalie are Emily Osment as Hannah’s best friend Lily, and Jason Earles as her brother Jackson.

The special features include “Backstage Pass” with Miley Cyrus and the Cast, plus a Music Video by Billy Ray Cyrus for his new song “Ready, Set, Please Don’t Go.” I challenge anyone with a daughter to listen to that song without crying.

My kids love Hannah Montana. Rubi and I watch it with them. Yes, the acting is over-the-top, but it’s generally wholesome entertainment. My oldest is 10 1/2, and I think much of the material is too old for her (all the dating and looooooove stuff that the tweens and teens in the show are going through), but I still think it’s a nice wholesome show.

I cringed at the last episode on this disk, because Hannah gets mad at her dad and screams “I hate you!” and I didn’t think that was a good thing for kids to hear a wholesome kid say to her dad - but they handled it well in the show and showed Hannah’s remorse for saying it.

Everytime Billy Ray deals with Hannah, my wife looks at me and says “That’ll be you” or “I can hear you saying that to Elizabeth”.

    Thanks for the review!

Kev - I agreed about the “I hate you” thing, but the truth is, some kids get that mad, and I like that it portrayed how awful she felt about it. And the Billy Ray song after that about letting go? Sob.
