You know you are a bona fide homeschooler when…
Tonya at Mother Wit tagged me for this one. I’m coming off a weekend of horrible-head-cold-Tae-kwon-do-promotion-father-in-law-visits-with-new-wife-and-step-daughter-Kevin’s-birthday busy-ness. I kind of feel like I’m digging out from under a big pile, but I can’t see daylight yet. So no guarantee that what I come up with will be very witty, ‘kay?
You know you’re a bona fide homeschooler when…
1…your kids get used to senior citizens giving them strange looks at Wal-mart on a weekday morning, and pop out with “We’re homeschooled!” before even asked.
2…the word “socialization” makes your teeth clench and your ears steam.
3…you have gotten over the whole “I have my kids’ standardized test scores right here in my purse, and they’re doing fine, really!” stage of needing to prove yourself as a teacher.
4…brown boxes on your porch bring a feeling that is something like falling in love. A similar feeling comes when you see a UPS truck, and then despair hits when it drives by your house without stopping.
5…the children’s librarian at the public library calls you when the new book order comes in to let you know that “we’ve got a really great book on Rome and I put it on the hold shelf for you.” Even before you knew they had the book or asked for it.
6…watching Apollo 13 for family movie night counts as Science.
7…your 9-year-old son corrects you when you forget the reasons Pluto is no longer considered a planet.
8…playing dress up is History.
9…you still read aloud to your kids, even though most of them can read very well by themselves.
10…you put blinders on when spring curriculum catalog season arrives, because what you’re already using is working great, and you don’t want to be tempted to change.
Okay, I tag Andrea, Lawanda, Birdie, Kris, Carrie, Sherry and Laney – if they have time to play along!

LOL! We did the same science lesson.
I’ll do it tomorrow. We just got a dog and the kids want me to post some pictures tonight.
September 18th, 2007 at 5:17 pmI love it!! Of course I’ll play along!!!
September 18th, 2007 at 6:27 pmLaney – Houston, we have a problem! I love that movie. Yesterday, when we were doing our astronomy lesson, there was a picture of how big the earth would look if you were orbiting the moon. Jonathan put his thumb up just like Tom Hanks in Apollo 13, in order to cover the earth. I thought that was so cute!
Carrie – looking forward to reading your answers!
September 18th, 2007 at 7:26 pmOh Carrie, #3 and #10 made my hubby laugh out loud. Yes, getting over the need to prove yourself is a big hurdle!
September 18th, 2007 at 8:21 pmChuck cringes when the new spring catalogs come in. He knows what is coming. LOL Great post and thanks for playing along!
Great list! I particularly identify with #9.
September 18th, 2007 at 8:26 pmI will give it a try.
I am not very witty even at best of times, though. You are forewarned
September 18th, 2007 at 9:39 pmI was going to say I don’t think l I could top those ones above.
September 19th, 2007 at 6:36 amI did think of one more though. Maybe I can think of more.
… when “Talk Like A Pirate” YouTube video is part of multiculturalism.
I particularly loved the brown boxes and falling in love. When the UPS truck delivers a package at our house everything stops, including my literature classes. The moment is too exciting to do anything else.
We had new holds on the library shelf too. It was such a thrill to be the first check out, until it became too common an occurrence.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:00 amFunny and TOO true! Thanks for tagging me. I will probably have to get to it after dinner when things settle down around here. As of today, my husband is STILL out of town and we have discovered that our van problems are due to a failing battery. The good news is that it isn’t anything worse. The bad news is that I have to take the enormous monstrosity to someone who ISN’T in an advanced state of pregnancy AND who still has arms long enough to change out said battery (It feels like mine arms are shrinking by the minute, but it might just be that my belly is growing…)!
September 20th, 2007 at 10:04 amBirdie – I hope tht battery thing gets fixed soon!
September 20th, 2007 at 12:32 pmThanks for the tag. I’ll have to ponder this one and see if I, too, can be witty despite the busyness.
September 20th, 2007 at 5:26 pmThe test scores are put away, but I still think about them too much. I am getting there!
I try not to look at new curriculum either! I get most of ours used from my sister and it has worked so far. If I had some cash to spend, though, I could really get into buying curriculum!
