Saturday Review Challenge
I’ve resisted many of the reading challenges that have come along, and stuck solely with the seasonal ones at Seasonal Soundings, but when I saw Sherry’s announcement of the Saturday Review Challenge, I just had to jump in. (Does that sentence have enough commas, or what?)
This challenge is definitely do-able. You choose six books that have been reviewed on Semicolon’s Saturday Review of Books, and read them by December 31, 2007. That’s only one book a month – you can handle that! There’s even a prize involved: a copy of Sherry’s book, Picture Book Preschool and a copy of Nancy Pearl’s Book Crush: For Kids and Teens—Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment and Interest.
Head on over to Semicolon to read the full instructions and get a copy of the button, designed by Sherry’s daughter. Then pick your books from the Saturday Review archives, or this in-progress list of books reviewed.
I’ve managed to find some books on the list that I have waiting on my to-be-read shelves. Here are my picks:
~Abide With Me by Elizabeth Strout – reviewed by Sherry.
~The Book Thief by Markus Zusak – reviewed by Sherry, U Krakovianki, A Reader’s Journal, Breaking the Fourth Wall, Stephen Lang, So Many Books, 3M, and Framed and Booked.
~Night by Elie Wiesel – reviewed by Sherry.
~Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen – reviewed by Musings.
~The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare – reviewed by BookFest.
~The Road by Cormac McCarthy – reviewed by Stephen Lang. (I don’t own this one, but can get it at the library.)
Be sure to leave a link at Sherry’s if you decide to read along!

Hey! Great to see the Bookfest suggestion on your list. I’m reading I Capture the Castle per your suggestion and also stuck a link to you through my blog. I’m looking forward to it!
July 3rd, 2007 at 10:01 pmYou’ve got some great books on your list. I really enjoyed The Book Thief–there is a really great audio version of it if you’re interested. It’s just outstanding. And Night and Sense & Sensibility are good choices too.
July 4th, 2007 at 12:15 pmCarrie – cool, thanks!
Becky – I already own Book Thief in print, so I’ll be reading it. I do listen to a lot of audiobooks, though, it helps make housework more enjoyable!
July 5th, 2007 at 11:05 amI saw an interview with Markus Zusak on NBC when The Book Thief first came out, and have wanted to read it ever since. I read his other book (I forget the title, about boxing and two brothers…. it was very very good)
Some of those others look Verrrrrry Interesting!
July 6th, 2007 at 9:34 amLawanda – for some reason, I had thought this was Zusak’s first novel. I’ll have to check that other one out!
July 6th, 2007 at 12:30 pmThanks for mentioning this challenge when you commented on the Book Thief. I hadn’t heard of it but will definitely check it out. You have a few on your list that are on my TBR list so I’ll be interested in your reviews.
July 8th, 2007 at 8:08 pmFramed – you’re welcome! Thanks for stopping by.
July 8th, 2007 at 10:19 pm[...] and I was reminded that I still have two books to read before the end of the year to complete my Saturday Review of Books Challenge. So I took The Road to bed with me. Kevin was tired enough that he said it wouldn’t bother [...]
