What’s up with you?

September 26, 2006 Categories: Books , Movies , Music , Television | 20 Comments

I just love opening up my e-mail and seeing all those lovely messages from you ladies (and guys)! So, in a shameless plug for comments, I have a few questions for you:

What are you reading lately?

I’m reading Persuasion, Leave Me Alone, I’m Reading, The Collected Works of Emily Dickinson, and Orthodoxy. I know, I haven’t added that last one to the sidebar yet.

What TV shows are you enjoying now that the new season has started? Are there any you’re still waiting for?

We’ve been watching House and Bones and the two new shows that follow them: Standoff and Justice. They’ve been pretty good so far. My parents recorded the season premiere of Heroes for me last night, since we can only pick up the Fox network with our antenna. I’ve been looking forward to that one all summer, but I probably won’t get the tape from Mom till this weekend. We’re also impatiently waiting for the Lost premiere.

What music have you been listening to lately?

I just got a CD of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. I had the cassette a long (long, long) time ago, but I’m sure it got eaten by my tape player or just plain worn out.

Seen any good movies lately?

We haven’t watched many movies lately, since we’ve been using our Netflix DVDs to overdose on Northern Exposure reruns.

So, answer the questions in the comments, or post them on your blog. Just be sure to leave me a link so I can come visit!

    What are you reading lately?

I’ve got a Christian Fiction novel called “The Source” on my shelf, and a YA Fantasy novel called “DragonKnight”, both sitting on my table waiting to be read.

House and Bones also. SG1 and SGA. Waiting on BSG.

What music have you been listening to lately?

I rarely “listen” to music. I often have the radio on in the van on the way to or from school, but the music is just the filler between the news.

    Seen any good movies lately?

    Nope.

Reading: Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy, Never Have Your Dog Stuffed and Other Things I’ve Learned by Alan Alda

TV: I don’t really watch any of the new shows. We have TiVo, so I’ve got a bunch of Friends reruns that I’m working my way through. Oh, I guess there is a new Food Network show called Ace of Cakes that I look forward to each week. It’s about a guy who owns an offbeat bakery and makes some very interesting cakes.

Listening to: Not For Kids Only by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman and lots of Andrew Peterson music.

Movies: Haven’t really watched any lately, although I did catch the last half of Remember the Titans when DH was watching it the other night. Definitely a good movie.

Your Blog ;) Pride and Prejudice.

Don’t have a TV during the week. Whatever everyone else is watching on the weekends :D

    Mix CDs mostly.

Pride and Prejudice. (Seems to be a theme there.)

  4. CamianAcademy

I’m reading Who Murdered Chaucer by Terry Jones. No idea about TV shows since we don’t own a TV. I listen to random music, whatever I’m in the mood for at the time that is on my iPod. Mostly I’m listening to the first volume of The Civil War by Shelby Foote. I’ve watched exactly two movies in the last year. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (on the release day back in November 2005) and The New World in early July. It was a very, very good movie.

1 – a stack of trashy romance novels (I know, you are so surprised) and I’m about to start “The Other Boleyn Girl”.

2 – whatever the girls are watching, and home reno shows when I can get a moment in front of it.

3 – Dude, we have had Rumours on CD for years. :) Yes we still listen to it. Lately, my faves in the MP3 player have been a Canadian guy called Dallas Green.

4 – Just Pride & Prejudice. ;) Any other movie shown in the house in the last week or two I haven’t been able to sit through. Oh! I saw She’s The Man as well as Everything Is Illuminated. (we watch more movies when Ron is away ;) )

  6. Karen

Reading: Not a Tame Lion, blogs

Watching: All the CSI‘s; just started watching House; Heroes looks interesting; Criminal Minds when we get home from church early enough.

    Listening: XM 32, The Message.

Movies: Everyone’s Hero; looking forward to The Guardian and Open Season this weekend!

  7. Lawanda

What are you reading lately? I am reading Les Miserables – online. It is a little rough going, I may have to check it out. But my thought was that it is so looong and I am always on here messing around doing nothing, so I just do it in my spare time. LOL

What TV shows are you enjoying now that the new season has started? Are there any you’re still waiting for? Well tonight I watched part of Dancing with the Stars, because I ADORE Sara Evans. And I think Mario Lopez is cute and so is Joey Lawrence. But i couldnt stand it too much, because 1)the dancing was so…. umm let’s say if I ever catch my daughters doing that in public, they will regret it, and 2) Too many boobies, bellies, and booties. Tsk tsk tsk. (And I would have said the same thing at age 18, so it isnt cuz I am old…a bit old-fashioned in that I like modesty, maybe!) And I so wish I could catch House, but alas! I never know when to plant myself in front of the tv, or else I am busy. So I watch it on vcr tapes my aunt sends me. LOL

What music have you been listening to lately? I have been listening to my normal hick music some, but actually – we have been learning new songs from our hymn books and recording them once we master them on CD’s. And I am loving listening to them and singing along, and picking out my kids or anyone i can. (I never hear myself, I wonder if it is because I am singing too much!? hehe)

Seen any good movies lately? Not that i can think of. What a bummer. :(

Well, thanks for the questions! FUN! :)

  8. Lisa

    Shameless plug for comments? *LOL*

Rosie and I are reading Little House on the Prairie. So far, we haven’t gagged any, but we did hold our noses when we got to the part about the Indians wearing skunk pelt thongs! We were so deep into the story that we could actually smell it! *TeeHee*

So far, the new tv season has been pretty blah. We have been keeping an eye on Amazing Race. The husband in the couple from Kentucky (Dave and Mary)is the son of one of Bennie’s co-workers! *Wow*

In the music department, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver/He Lives in Me. *Really nice*

Movies? Stuart Little. Rosie and I watched it Monday night. She hasn’t read the book yet… *Grin*

Have a wonderful day, Miss Carrie! *Hugs-a-bunch*

  9. Randi

Books: A Walk in the Woods–hilarious!

Music: Not much, but I really want to get an Elton Jown CD! I love Fleetwood Mac, by the way,

TV: No reception, but we are enjoying Gilmore Girls on DVD

Movies: The Baxter–Not a well known movie but if you can find it at the movie store, try it. It has great characters and a sweet story.

Reading — Creative Visualization, by Shakti Gawain. Need a good, fun fiction read, but haven’t found one yet.

TV — Waiting for Battlestar Galactica. Trying to finish Season 2 of Lost, from Netflix, so we’ll know what’s going on when Season 3 starts. Watched Heroes last night — not bad.

Music — Just Radio Disney when we’re in the car. Ds loves it. I like that they take out or change objectionable lyrics. Would you believe I have the, um, vinyl album Rumours? Scary.

Movies — as a family, we recently enjoyed RV, Hoot, and The Shaggy Dog. Dh and I liked Failure to Launch, Fun with Dick and Jane, Walk the Line, and 50 First Dates. We rarely go to movie theaters.

  11. carrie

Oooooo – look at all these lovely comments! I’ll have to do this more often.

Kev – it took me a while, but I think I figured out your abbreviations: Stargate1 and Stargate Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica?

Jodi – I loved Never Have Your Dog Stuffed. I used to sneak downstairs after my parents were asleep and watch M*A*S*H re-runs. :)

Ron – Yes, there does seem to be a theme! I loved both the book and the movie, although many purists won’t watch the movie because they already love the A&E miniseries that is much longer, and therefore more true to the novel.

Camian – My husband and I tried to watch The New World, but couldn’t get into it. It seemed so slow. We gave it an hour and then gave up. Could’ve been that we were just too tired, though. Also, we’d been watching lots of Alias re-runs and anything seems slow compared to that!

Andrea – How was Everything is Illuminated? I’ve considered adding it to my Netflix queue a couple times cause it looks interesting, but I haven’t heard anything about it.

Karen – my kids are waiting for Open Season, too. It will take a while to come to our little backwoods theater, though.

Lawanda – I agree about Dancing With the Stars. I like watching it when my parents remember to record it- and I LOVE Sara Evans – but I don’t watch it with my boys around because of the costumes. And what a cool idea to make your own CDs!

Lisa – Glad to hear you’re enjoying Little House. I remember that scene with the Indians, too. Her books are so well-written I almost feel like I LIVED them.

Randi – I keep hinting to my hubby that I’d love an Elton John greatest hits CD for my birthday – but since I’ve been doing it for a couple years now, I may have to just break down and buy it for myself! I just added The Baxter to my Netflix queue – it looks good.

FloridaMom – we loved The Shaggy Dog! And I enjoyed Failure to Launch. Of course I’d watch him (Matthew McConaughey sp?) in anything! ;)

  12. Andrea (admin)

I thought Everything Is illuminated was really good. There’s some language in it though. It’s quirky little film, good but quiet – loads of almost-still shots. A lot of undercurrents that aren’t verbalized. I really had to be in the mood to sit still and watch, but I liked it. :)

  13. carrie

Andrea – cool, I’m going to go add it to my queue.

  14. Ron

I thought that the person who really made that movie was Matthew Macfadyen. Not that the other actors did a bad job. But I thought he did far more to give it the feel of the 1800′s than anything else in the movie. I don’t think any could represent the range of character that existed in the upper class at the time but I thought he did an incredible job of playing an aristocrat.

  15. paradisefound

Reading: The Constant Princess by Phillipa Gregory (now), The Lightning Thief (next), Gone with the Wind (soon).

TV: House & Grey’s Anatomy and the continual M.A.S.H reruns that hubby has on.

    Music: Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

Movie: Hoot, Failure to Launch (next up)

Andrea, I enjoyed The Other Boleyn Girl but her newest isn’t doing it for me (reading it now).

  16. Andrea (admin)

Kim – I read The Constant Princess first and I found with both, I am reading ahead too much. :D By that, I mean skipping and skimming, just to find out what happens.
But the Tudors are my faves.

  17. Carrie K.

Ron – I agree. I didn’t have a problem with Keira Knightley as Elizabeth when I watched the movie, but after reading the book I think she got the characterization wrong. But MacFadyen was wonderful. And I thought that Donald Sutherland would be distracting as Mr. Bennett, but I think he did a fairly good job.

Paradise – I’ve never watched Gray’s Anatomy, but since I’ve always loved ER and am now addicted to House, any hospital drama would probably be a hit with me. Since I don’t have cable and my attena only gets Fox, I’ll have to wait and watch that on DVD.

  18. Andrea (admin)

I absolutely *loved* Donald Sutherland as Mr Bennet. And I got Kris’ (paradisefound) name wrong in the last comment and called her Kim instead. Sigh.

  19. carrie

Andrea – I’m sure Kris will understand! I have so much trouble keeping first names straight if their screen name is something different.

  20. paradisefound

Andrea, no worries. I’m Kim at least three times a week. You just fulfilled number 2. ;-)
