Review of The Bark of the Bog Owl
(The Bark of the Bog Owl was provided to me free of charge by Active Christian Media, who received it from the publisher for the purpose of being reviewed.)
The Bark of the Bog Owl by Jonathan Rogers is a children’s book, but only in the sense that The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, and the Harry Potter books are children’s books. Children reading at a 5th grade level or higher will be able to read this book, and it would be a great read-aloud for younger kids. But adults will love it, too. I started this book two days ago, stayed up until I couldn’t keep my eyes open last night trying to finish it, and finished the last two chapters over breakfast this morning, telling the kids, “Just a minute, I’m almost done” when they asked for help with something.
The Bark of the Bog Owl is a re-telling of the biblical story of King David. Don’t think, though, that this book will only appeal to Christians. It is a great adventure story set in a the fictional kingdom of Corenwald. Aidan Errolson is a twelve-year-old shepherd boy who thirsts for adventure and has a strong desire to do great things for his beloved country of Corenwald.
His life is pretty ordinary until the day he hears the bark of the bog owl for the first time and meets Dobro Turtlebane of the feechiefolk. On that day, he learns he is the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy and his life is turned upside down.
I am starting The Secret of the Swamp King, the second book in the Wilderking trilogy today and I’m sure I will be posting a review soon if it is as “un-put-down-able” as the first book. The third book, The Way of the Wilderking is being released May 1st, and I will be purchasing it so that we own the complete set. Natalie is ready to start The Bark of the Bog Owl after she saw me racing my way through it, and I know the boys will enjoy them, too. These books would make a great addition to any family’s collection.

I got this book from our library for my 8 year old, based on your review. He loved it! On a recent plane flight, he stayed up really late reading it while the rest of us fell asleep - definitely “un-put-down-able” to him!
