“Well-meaning amateur” and proud of it!

Shepherd’s Flock Academy has a great post in response to the janitor/member of the Illinois Education Association who called all homeschooling parents amateurs.

“‘Why would some parents assume they know enough about every academic subject to home-school their children? You would think that they might leave this — the shaping of their children’s minds, careers, and futures — to trained professionals?’ Dave Arnold, a member of the Illinois Education Association, is head custodian at Brownstown Elementary School in Southern Illinois, quoted in Home Schools Run By Well-Meaning Amateurs.

The following is a short list of people whose minds, careers and futures have been totally destroyed by ‘well-meaning amateurs’:

She follows this with a huge list of people who were homeschooled. Good list to have on hand. Also, if you haven’t read all of Mr. Arnold’s post on the NEA site, click on over. It’ll make your blood boil.

Poopy about the ankle! Hope it heals up soon.

I’m a camper. We used to do some extreme camping – outback in the snow. I won’t do that with the kids until they’re big enough to carry their own stuff & be responsible for it. Roo is a geologist by training & he’s done his share of being in the wilderness all alone; he used to get choppered into the middle of nowhere in the Yukon for a couple weeks, & told where to be for the chopper pick up.

Since the kids arrived, we mostly do what we call sissy camping: federal & provincial campsites with showers.

It’s so cool that you’ve found a way to be there in a way that works for you. Way to go for inventive problem solving :-)
